6 Pakistani Troops Killed, 3 Hostage After Militant Attack

(MENAFN) At least six paramilitary troops were killed and three others taken hostage following a militant assault on a security checkpoint on the outskirts of Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, local media reported.

The attack struck the fringes of Peshawar — capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan — according to local English-language daily Dawn, citing unnamed sources. Eight suspected militants were killed during the clash, and four paramilitary personnel were wounded.

Security forces "foiled" the militants' attempt to capture the post, the newspaper reported, citing sources.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the assault, though the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — a consortium of several militant organizations — has carried out similar attacks across the region in recent years.

Tuesday's violence compounds an already deteriorating security picture. Last month, the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies warned in an assessment that after two consecutive months of improvement, Pakistan's security situation had sharply worsened in May, driven primarily by surging terrorist activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southwestern province of Balochistan.
