Pakistan Shells Afghan Province, Killing 4, Injuring 70

(MENAFN) Pakistani mortar and rocket fire struck eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province Monday, killing four people and wounding 70 others, Afghanistan's deputy government spokesman said, in a cross-border attack that has left the region on edge.

Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy government spokesman, broke the news via social media, directly attributing the deadly bombardment to Pakistani forces and marking a sharp escalation in tensions along the volatile border between the two neighboring nations.

A formal statement issued by Kunar Province authorities confirmed that the wounded had been evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while warning that the local security situation remained tense — signaling fears of further hostilities.

The violence was not confined to a single front. A local broadcaster reported that the Luqman-Spin Boldak area in Kandahar Province was also attacked by mortar shells, suggesting a broader pattern of cross-border strikes extending deep into Afghan territory on the same day.

The attacks risk inflaming already strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad, whose ties have grown increasingly fractious over border security, militant activity, and competing regional interests. Neither Pakistani authorities nor official military channels had issued an immediate response to the allegations at the time of reporting.
