Afghan Government Urges UN to Lift Sanctions on Top Officials

(MENAFN) The Afghan government called on Monday for the United Nations Security Council to lift sanctions imposed on nearly two dozen senior officials, according to reports.

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the council’s update to the sanctions list “violates individuals’ rights and is ineffective,” as stated by reports.

The updated sanctions list includes the prime minister, the deputy prime minister for economic affairs, and the interior minister. Mujahid argued that the measures not only infringe on the rights of officials but also negatively impact the broader public.

The UN Security Council recently revised the list, leaving 22 senior Afghan officials subject to sanctions, which include travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes, according to reports.
